Midnight cheer in Telangana
Minutes after home minister P Chidambaram's announcement that the Centre will initiate the process of forming the state of Telangana, spontaneous celebrations broke out at Osmania University as well as in the Telangana districts. The rally scheduled for Thursday has been converted into a victory rally. The entire TRS top brass assembled at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences, and much to the inconvenience of other patients in the hospital, burst crackers. But nobody seemed to mind. For Telangana votaries, Wednesday was filled with suspense for the most part as the Congress high command spent the entire day in marathon deliberations. In the morning, both the 'separate state' and 'united Andhra' proponents were active. While a group of Andhra and Rayalaseema parliamentarians met Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the occasion of her birthday and urged her not to divide the state, about a dozen Telangana Congress MPs also called on her and sought a separate state at the earliest. ''We are hoping that it would be her birthday gift for the people of the region,'' said Malkajgiri MP Sarve Satyanarayana and he was proved right a few hours later.
Caught between those demanding a separate state and those apprehending that it will fall into the hands of the Maoists, the Congress core group held two long meetings and deliberated on the demand and the situation in Andhra Pradesh.
But with no consensus emerging in these meetings, the Congress chief decided to meet chief minister K Rosaiah who had landed in the capital a few hours earlier. After the meeting at 10 Janpath, the CM drove down to 7 Race Course Road and held discussions with the PM.
Rosaiah then left for Hyderabad without speaking to the media. Chidambaram's announcement came even as Rosaiah was on his way from Hyderabad airport to meet KCR and convey the good news. A resolution is likely to be moved in the state assembly on Thursday, which will now see unanimity with the ruling party backing it as well.
Throughout the day, the TRS chief remained defiant, refusing to break his fast and even declining intravenous fluids. Doctors, who warned that he could slip into a coma, said he refused to give blood samples for laboratory tests to check his sinking parameters. The medical team monitoring his health maintained his condition was much the same as it was late on Tuesday, with signs of protein malnutrition.
Later in the day, KCR's son Taraka Rama Rao told reporters that his father had also developed a fungal infection and that it had aggravated matters and made treatment more complicated.
A medical bulletin reiterated that his fat as well as protein reserves were alarmingly depleted and that he should resume oral feeds immediately.
Though the 55-year-old was informed about the urgent need for insertion of central intravenous line for administration of fluids and medication, doctors said KCR refused to allow it and as a result medicines could not be given for a long time. Later, however, he relented and took intravenous fluids.
Until Chidambaram's announcement, Hyderabad was bracing for a shutdown of all schools and business establishments in the apprehension that there may be law and order problem because of the rally called by students to the state assembly.
The Andhra capital had become a fortress ahead of Thursday's rally with additional reinforcements coming in from RAF and neighbouring Karnataka. The agitation across the region is now expected to subside.
After breaking his fast, KCR promised to compensate the families of those who committed suicide after he undertook his fast.
While it is cheerful news for the Telangana region, it is not so for the Andhra and Rayalaseema regions. The issue of who would get Hyderabad has to be settled. But for now, the day belonged to Telangana, KCR and the students who brought an entire region to a standstill for the past two weeks.
YDERABAD/NEW DELHI: Telangana erupted with joy a little before midnight after the UPA government finally conceded to the demand for the creation of a separate state following the fast-unto-death undertaken by TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao 11 days ago, which whipped up a frenzy in the entire region.

BJP corners Govt in Parliament over Telangana issue:
New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) With passions flying high over Telangana, BJP today sought to corner Government in Parliament over the issue of the separate state, demanding a bill in the current session itself for carving it out of Andhra Pradesh. Deputy leader of BJP in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and senior party leader M Venkaiah Naidu in the Rajya Sabha raised the issue in Zero Hour saying the Government should bring a bill in right earnest."Andhra Pradesh is on a boil. You don't want a solution. What is the stand of Congress and UPA on Telangana? You said you wanted a consensus. I don''t think anybody is opposing now," Naidu said accusing the ruling party of acting in a manner which is giving rise to tensions.
BJP members Prakash Javadekar, Rudra Narayan Pany and others also stormed into the well of the Upper House over the issue. Swaraj told Speaker Meira Kumar that one of the members K Chandrasekhar Rao is on a fast-unto-death to press the issue, the agitation over which is intensifying each passing day.
The refrain of Naidu and Swaraj was that since their party is favouring formation of separate Telangana and Congress too has been speaking in support of it for some time, the Constitution Amendment bill could be passed easily. In the Rajya Sabha, S S Ahluwalia (BJP) demanded a statement from the Home Minister on Telangana issue.
Minister Ambika Soni assured the House that she would apprise the Home Minister and the Prime Minister about the matter.
